Ginger Hanssen

Care is There Geriatric Care Management welcomes Ginger Brown Hanssen to the care management team as Financial Services Specialist.

Using her 18 years of experience in banking and finance, Ginger will help our clients and their loved ones develop strategies to handle bill paying, banking, financial management, and legal planning. A key component to her role will be to identify the client’s needs and work with elder law attorneys, financial planners, CPA’s, bankers, trust officers and insurance advisors to construct customized solutions. She will work closely with the Care is There Lifestyle Coordinators to adjust the client’s plans if life events, memory loss, or health problems occur.

“I found myself drawn to this part of my work,” says Ginger. “People want someone they can trust, someone they can have a relationship with and that is exactly the way I like to do business.”

“I personally feel the anxiety it can bring no matter how well planned out a parent has tried to make it for their children. It can be a struggle for those whose children live out of town or do not have any family at all. I am so excited to be a part of this company that is committed to assisting those in these situations!”

Ginger grew up in Charlottesville. She was very involved in assisting her parents as they aged, particularly with their financial needs. Her father passed away in 2004 and her mother was diagnosed with Dementia in 2012, which has led to the first stages of Alzheimer’s. “In my career, I have worked at nearly all levels of banking from a teller to bank manager, loan processor to private banking and treasury management,” says Ginger. “I have a strong network of relationships with assisted living, accountants, financial advisors, realtors, lawyers and bankers.” These experiences and the networks that have developed from them have prepared her for this opportunity to guide and serve our clients.

Transportation

Aging can create many different hurdles, one of the biggest is mobility problems that hinder your loved one’s ability to drive. There are adaptive technologies available for many different types of mobility issues; the trick is obtaining the skills to use them. After all, driving is a key factor in providing an independent lifestyle.

DriveAbility is an adaptive driving program offered by the occupational therapy department at Winchester Rehabilitation Center. The program is designed to help people drive again following illness, injury or a physically limiting condition.

Senior citizens can benefit from this program, as they will be evaluated in two stages: pre-driving and on the road. The pre-driving evaluation is completed by a registered occupational therapist who will review medical history, functional ability, thinking skills, visual perception and reaction time. This assessment will determine if your loved one can or should be behind the wheel of a vehicle. Once the pre-driving assessment is complete and the individual’s goals are discussed, DriveAbility coordinates with a local driving school to run the on-road test with a certified driving instructor.

Together, the occupational therapist and driving instructor determine the driver’s skill and mobility. These results are then shared with the client and physician.

In addition to teaching a new way to drive, the evaluations provide a unbiased, definitive assessment of your loved one’s abilities, giving you the peace of mind needed whether it means they’ll get to stay on the road, or will have to acknowledge that they shouldn’t be behind the wheel.

Watch the video below or visit their website to learn more:

In order to take advantage of DriveAbility’s services, you must first consult a physician and receive a referral for occupational therapy driving evaluation. Then call 540-536-5113 to make an appointment.

There are some fees associated with this program that may not be covered by insurance, such as additional services provided by an occupational therapist and behind-the-wheel sessions.

If your elderly loved one should not be behind the wheel, read about Transportation Options here.

Looking for information about retirement communities? Come to a Q&A session with a panel of representatives from three great options in the Harrisonburg-Rockingingham Virginia area.

On Friday, May 16, a panel of representatives from three of our local retirement communities will explain the differences between independent living, assisted living, and long-term care options. During the presentation you will learn what CCRC’s (Continuing Care Retirement Communities) offer and how Bridgewater Retirement Community, Sunnyside Community, and Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community can help you or your family navigate through the transitions of life.

The presentation will be a part of the monthly meeting of the Aging in Place Round Table from the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce. Join us from 9:00 – 10:30am at Bridgewater Retirement Community (302 North Second Street, Bridgewater) in the Houff Community Center. Visitors are welcome – look for the HR Chamber signs!

The meeting will also feature a “member spotlight” presentation by Fred Haar, CEO and Administrator of Senior Helpers.

About the Aging in Place Round Table from the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce:  The Aging in Place Round Table seeks to educate the community about local services supporting vitality and choice in the second half of life and to provide a forum for discussion and collaboration about the issues surrounding aging in place.
