As your elderly loved one’s hearing deteriorates, so does his or her ability to actively participate in the conversations. This can cause them to stop living their life to the fullest. Hearing loss is one of the most treatable symptoms of aging; hearing aids and other devices are available, but at a cost.
For those patients living in hospice care, it can sometimes come down to having to choose between hearing aids or daily care. Jimmy Stewart and Michael Combs, local hearing specialists at Hearing Healthcare of Virginia, believed that no one should have to make that decision. That is why they initiated the Hospice Hearing program, a donation-based program specifically for used hearing aids.
Organized by the Hearing Healthcare of Virginia in association with Hospice of Piedmont, Southern Care and Sentara, the community brings hearing aids into the office. The devices are checked and prepared to be given to their new homes, hospice patients in the community. Hearing professionals donate their time to fit the patients with the devices that are best suited to their needs.
The mandate of the program? To provide free hearing aids to hospice patients without the resources to purchase them.
