There is a beauty that exists in our built environment when a building is balanced, functional, efficient, accessible, healthy, and comfortable. Our homes should allow us to easily accomplish our daily tasks, be comfortable, help us recharge our energy levels, and be able to adapt over time as our needs change. All of these attributes are possible in a home if designed properly by an architect that understands Universal Design and Building Science.
There are many terms to describe design that addresses all of these issues; aging in place, universal design, easy living, sustainable design, just to name a few. Regardless of what you call it, all of these attributes are simply good design. Incorporating elements that allow a home to be more functional for everyone that uses it is as simple as towel bars that act as grab bars, no-step entries, and door levers instead of knobs. These elements will make daily life easier for everyone – just think about the last time you tried to open a door with your arms full of groceries – a lever door handle would make that easier – it also is easier for someone with severe arthritis. Design for a lifetime home should not look institutional; it should enhance function while adding to the beauty of the design solution. The Gaines Group, PLC has designed homes and businesses for 26 years that address these design issues. From energy efficient to accessibility the company is focused on providing the solutions that best fits the needs of the client.
Charles Hendricks, one of the three partners at the firm runs the Harrisonburg office, is trained as a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) and LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP). He has designed lifetime homes for clients that have energy usage 30% below the area average, renovations that cut energy usage by up to 68%, and is currently working on an age restricted apartment complex, Timberlake Place, that will be 100% Universal Design Compliant and EarthCraft Certified.
I know Charles personally and have seen his dedication to his work and to people it serves. Among many other community service contributions, Charles is the founder and co-chairman of the Aging in Place Business Round Table from the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce. We’re lucky to have Charles building both our homes and our community!
